Reading the The Great War Diary of Walter Shuttleworth my great-uncle Walter Shuttleworth kept during the First World War until his death in 1917 was one of the reasons I became interested in my family history. In the course of my research I have discovered many other casualties of that war amongst my relatives. Here is a list of those who lost their lives:

Two families in particular suffered terribly. Heneage and Mary Hemmings lost all 3 of their sons, and Mary Alice Wall lost 4 of her 6 sons.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
